Hmm.. a tricky one (for me at least). My parents were a teacher and a civil engineer. I went to public school and then university to study biochemistry, so I should be middle class.

But I work in a care home for rather less than the average wage. I haven't been abroad on holiday for several years, we only have one TV (14", albeit colour) and one car (10 years old). Politically I'm 'old' Labour (ie socialist rather than this New Labour cr*p). I own my own home, don't have an overdraft, buy fairtrade when I can. I drink red wine, don't like football and my only piece of 'designer' clothing is a three year old pair of Berghaus walking shoes.

I think the traditional benchmarks of the classes have either gone completely or the margins between them are blurred. Income, education, job, spending habits, even aspirations, no longer seem to define one's class in a way that would have been the case 20 or even 15 years ago.

And quite rightly, since whatever purpose such pigeonholing may have served in the past surely no longer exists. Who cares anymore? I think that like have a nice day we can all be in a class of our own, decide to be in whatever class we feel we most identify with or declare ourself entirely classless. Certainly I know lots of people who think I have no class at all.

I was born into a lower class family supported by the govt. I have worked my way into the middle class.. and once I graduate college I hope to be upper middle class.. its all about money in this country and if you dont have any, your stuck with what the government feels you are worth.

I was born in the `old` East End of London, where if you wore a shirt to work, then you were really posh, no one had two pennies to scratch their back-sides with.I went to university and got good qualifications to enable me to get a good and highly paid job.I also somewhere along the way lost my cockney accent. So what "class" am I now? I`ll tell you;- I don`t fit in anywhere, the older family members, think that I have `got above my self` and the professional people that I work with, sometimes drive me up the wall, the way they refer to `the uneducated working classes`.
It is time that this class rubbish was tossed away. We should not be judged and ear marked by hoe much money we have and what sort of a job we do.

I don't agree with the class system but would say i'm middle class. apparently i have a posh accent but am not going to change the way i speak just to try and fit in with what people want. annoys me when people try and pretend they're down with the working classes when they're blatantly not. luckily i think the class system is gradually disppearing.

i dont really believe in class. It's an absolute disgrace that your put into classes, it just shows that how much money you've got is always the most important to some people. I do not belong to any class, i don't have to be put down just because what i do or how much i earn....
