Coffee grounds, tea bags, and beer. You should see my compost!

Another hint is to layer news paper, leaves, straw. 7 to 9 layers of newspaper (or card board, one sheet), 4 inches of leaves, 4 inches of straw or grass clippings (preferably partially decomposed), all you want coffee grounds, cheap beer. You can plant directly in this, have instant gratification and ammend your soil.

By the way, lime "sweetens" the soil

Cover with a tarpaulin after soaking the leaves with water should speed the process up, especially, if the heap gets some sunshine to generate a bit of heat.

Water, nitrogen, critter density and heat are often limiters. This is why most people creat a compost pile as it solves all of these problems.

Lime, although it is not recommended because it will adversely affect the PH of the finished compost and soil.

Fresh chicken manure. This is very hot stuff. Also the more you turn your pile, the more oxygen you give it , speeding up the decomp process.
