Mass mailings - no! These will only end up in the SPAM or BULK mail of people and rather than promote could, if done incorrectly, generate bad publicity.
Banner exchanges is a possibility...however, no flashing banners with gaudy colouring...small, well designed yes, could work.
Adding a signature line to all emails you generate is unobtrusive and sometimes an effective way of generating traffic.
Possibly creating a Refer service would work...visitors to your site, when they sign up are asked to refer people they believe would be interested in your site offerings. For, say, 5 referrals that prove productive they would receive a Free listing on your site for one auction.
Create a "contest" and list it with some of the Contest sites...offering a free auction listing for one item, for instance and include the value of the "prize" in the contest information.
Most sites that are seeking the generation of traffic have to come up with creative ways of doing it. Creating hype with no rewards doesn't work any longer...
Register with Adsense and have your ad become part of the system to be added to like sites. These generate reasonable results because they are not imposing on the visitor and they are geared towards what the visitor is interested to begin with. It's possible that your adsense ad could be posted on sites such as Amazon.com, Google, Ebay etc. Any site that has related auction information...including when people search for auctions.
Create a newsletter or message board...add things of interest to not only your current clientele but incentives that will have them spreading the word for you.
A site such as BzzAgent.com might be of benefit as well...word of mouth agents that talk to people about services and products they have tried.
Do up a very good ebook or pdf that relates to the Auction world in general...How to write a Winning auction, how to take effective pictures, best way to display your product/item etc etc. By making this a really great item that is available for free and includes screen captures of your site as examples that when clicked, would lead the reader directly to that page on your site (this could entice the reader to then explore the site on their own) in each article...also including links to your site as well as perhaps incentives to join your site and use your auction service...can generate more traffic as well.
Grabbing a book on how to run an auction site will garner more ideas about how to market it. Searching on how to market an auction site will also get you more great info. You want to stay away from any marketing scheme that irritates people however. Bulk anything, annoying banners, overly large signature lines or blatant "advertising" of your site on other sites such as message boards sales pitch and nothing else that is remotely related to the site you are visiting, will result in bad press.
Goes without saying...ensure that the major search engines are aware of your site. Typing in "auctions" garnered no mention of your site up to page 5...ideally page 3 is the furthest you want to be, page one within the top 10 is optimum. "auction sites" was the same result, no mention as of page 5.
Ensure the site is setup (in the html code) to optimally invite the crawlers and robots but to avoid the pages you do not want it to crawl. The index is the main area therefore you want to direct the robots to this. There is specific code that instructs robots to crawl only the index. Ensure that the content is always fresh, this continues to invite the robots to your site and boosts your standings. The more visits made to the site, the higher the rank climbs to. In the Meta Tags ensure that KEY words are included. Don't place a truck load of keywords as the crawlers stop normally at about the first 10. Make these 10 words count by putting the MAIN aspects of your site here. If you have free auctions put "free auctions" as one of the metawords. There are sites that offer tutorials on doing this up well and effectively.
Okay...enough from me :) Good luck with this, looks good thus far, hope it all grows wildly for you and is successful beyond your visioning.

Because all the cool sayings and Easter Bunnies and Graphic Crosses were already taken. Yeah , it's trite, but... It's all I can think to say at this less than perky pre-Coffee moment! Seriously, what is better on a greeting card than: Romans 8:26 And in the same way the Spirit is a help to our feeble hearts: for we are not able to make prayer to God in the right way; but the Spirit puts our desires into words which are not in our power to say,, Pray, pray , pray, prayer is good. Even when we do not know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit will pray for what is best for us!!! Awesome! oooh, some happy warm glowing fuzzy feelings... really... sincerely... I love that quote... very sweet... but you know what else is sweet? My honey, my husband, (also an Atheist, btw.) I suppose the Atheist could just send a card that says "I love you". Why not? My sweetie always leaves strange love notes around the house!!!! "Your kindness is your stregnth..... Your eyes make me smile.... etc etc..." Who's to say an Atheist does not know love?

Youre Doing it already.... Good Job!!! If you hadnt typed it in here i wouldnt have known it existed.
Well if you want more then place it as your signature so every email you send will contain the website. Post it on schools or vendors and such. otherwise people might just look at it as spam.
