Well, i'm 20 so i don't have kids but i know that my parents would put us to bed on christmas even, pretty late actually because in my family christmas eve is traditionally a very big celebration as well. when we were in bed my parents would put the gifts from santa under the tree. all the other gifts were already there. And about telling your kids about santa when they ask. most rational kids will figure out he's not real for themselves, but for the young ones, keep the dream alive because the magical aspect of it is part of what makes christmas so special for them. like i said, i'm 20 and i still get a little something from santa under the tree. i obviously know he's not real but its still part of my childhood that comes back to me whenever i see the name tag on the gift.

When our boys were small, we'd put the presents under the tree after they were asleep, which was often quite late. That way if they snuck out to try to get a peek at Santa later in the night, he was already here. As for the questions about Santa, I tried to find out what my kids were told by other kids and worked around that. That worked when they were very young. When they got olde, one of my sons asked about Santa and I told him his father and I were really Santa and that we loved playing the part. He tought we were lying to him all those years but we told him the truth--we were were just play-acting to make Christmas more fun, which is quite true.

Put the gifts out after you KNOW the kids are asleep! I say that Santa is real... Eventually you'll know when they are ready to know and then I confess. My 8 year old just asked if I was Santa and I said No a couple of times and relief spread over her face and she said "I knew it! I knew he was real!" Also, when they figure out "one" do not assume they figure out the others because two days before she asked about Santa I confessed I was the Easter Bunny.
There will be kids who will say "Santa is not real." So I asked my kids "Does everyone believe in God? Has everyone seen God?"
When we go to Santa for a picture or see him in a parade I tell them that we never know if this is the Real Santa because they can tell that the Santas are not the same and know they can not be in every mall at the same time!

I tell my son Santa Claus is with God (because he encompasses everything that is good and joyous). I tell him Santa clause knows everything.
I put the gifts under the tree on Christmas eve after everyone has gone to sleep.

the excitement of Santa , the Easter bunny , the tooth fairy .. is what makes being a child so fun . its like a Lil story they grow soon enough to know its all imaginary . i don't know a child that cant remember that excitement or on that holds it against their parents for lying . let them enjoy it while they can. when they are old enough to question about it and really wanting to know the truth tell them .
as for putting the gift out do it after they are all asleep and just before you turn in ... you might not want to stay up too late they sure to be Early risers in the morning.

I think 6 pm before they go to bed so they can get a good look at all there new toys. I think you tell them that Santa Claus is only make believe and that you buy all there toys for them at Christmas time.
