I know this question has been asked a lot, but I'm writing an argumentative paper and I want to make sure I cover all of my bases.

So.. are you for or against same-sex marriage, and why?

1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control are not natural.
2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people cannot get legally married because the world needs more children.
3. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children.
4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful, since Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.
5. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and it hasn't changed at all: women are property, Blacks can't marry Whites, and divorce is illegal.
6. Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.
7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are always imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.
8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall.
9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage license.
10. Children can never succeed without both male and female role models at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.
11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to cars or longer lifespans.
12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians.

I support same-sex marriage. Why? There is more and more evidence that sexuality is not a learned behavior. There was a study done recently that did show something in the DNA of homosexuals that is not present in heterosexuals. (Sorry, don't remember where I read it, but it was within the past couple months.)

Whenever I ask people about this I always ask them to give me a reason that has nothing to do with religion....I have yet to hear one. I do hear a lot of, "Homosexuality is disgusting and is just wrong." I don't think that's an argument to be against same sex marriage. Why is it disgusting? Why is it wrong?

That being said, "marriage" is considered a religious event. So, I think all couples who wish to be together should go to the city hall for a civil union license. Then if they wish to be married, they go to their place of worship and conduct the actual religious ceremony.

That's my 2 cents.

In the constitutional sense of the the question you should be for it. But in a religious sense you should be against it. I don't really care whether it is legalized or not. I have nothing against lesbians or gay guys. I have even been a little bi-curious before myself and if I would have choosen that path, I would be angry that just because of the government I wouldn't be able to express my love in the same way as a man and woman. The constitution gave us certain freedoms that I believe making this illegal would violate. But then again God meant marriage to be between a man and a woman. But it isn't like it is one of the 10 commandments. I don't really know what is right or wrong. I just know that it won't affect me and unless it does it is hard to be really argumentative about it.

Against it. Why confuse our children any more? Divorce has already done too much confusion for the children and now adults bring same-sex marriage in front of them. A child wants one mother and one father and no more. With divorce they end up with 2 fathers and 2 mothers and sometimes more. This confuses a child. Can you imagine what they will think when they start seeing men kissing men everywhere. Homosexuals have a sex perversion attitude. Such as Neil P. Harris coming out with just his underwear on the Oscars. Totally wanting people to see that he is not a wimp but that he has muscle. And of course our children were watching and since we are teaching them no embarrassment and no shame, they laughed and giggled thinking they can do the same thing whenever they wish. Indecent adults are detrimental to the mental health of our children. A child wants one mother and one father and no more. Any more confuses their minds. Divorce is a rejection to a child and adding extra people in their life makes them angry. And now, you throw in same-sex marriage. Think About The Children. All adults are thinking about is their selves and their pleasures. This is not good for our children.

I'm for it, because there's no reason why two people who love each other should be denied rights that married people enjoy, just because they are the same sex. It's funny that God comes up in this discussion, because everyone has tried so hard to keep separation of church and state. Marriage is like a legal binding contract, to be recognized by the state as being married. If everyone says it's against God and should be banned, where's the separation of church and state there? God has nothing to do with it!

I could care less. If two homo's want to get married big deal! They are already doing everything else.

As to the hypocritical "if god intended" nonsense, if people really believed so much in god, all this crap about adultery would not cram all the disk space on yahoo answers!

I don't agree with the life style at all however, they (the gays and lesbian's) will have to deal with "GOD" at judgment day if it's such an abomination just like the cheaters justifying their actions here.

Come-on! How about worry about all the Innocent people getting killed in wars (on the streets of America for that matter) and getting raped and pillaged by company executives like the ones at Enron?

In most cases, people marry for love.
Love is at the foundation of human experience.
To love someone and be loved in return is just about the all time greatest gift to anyone's life.
Everyone has the right to love and be loved.

Therefore, any two people who love each other, so long as they are not related by blood, should have the right to marry and legalize the love they both feel for each other.

Several European countries have legalized it such as the Netherlands and Spain. Canada has legalized it and Mexico just voted to legalize same sex marriage. Mass. has legalized it and a large number of U.S. states allow for civil unions.

There exists a great many legal benefits to married couples. Same sex couples ought to have the same legal rights. Most of all society needs to wake up and practice tolerance for all people. This is the nature of a free democracy. That the state protects the rights of minorities.

America has made immense strides in racial tolerance and integration. Now we have laws protecting all the races in our society. But the work is not complete. The sexual revolution addressing the all important issue of women's rights is paramount and there now exist laws protecting women and granting them they same constitutional protections as men.

So with same sex. It is time that Americans awaken to real compassion, deep understanding and practice true tolerance. Since part of the population is homosexual, there needs to be legal and social recognition of this aspect of human life.

There was a time when inter-racial marriage was a social no no. But no federal law could be created to stop people who love each other from marrying. Same for everyone.

Let us please practice tolerance and respect for all.
Everyone has the right to pursue happiness. This is granted us in our Constitution. Remember that, please.
God Bless Us All.

LOL I agree with pinkglowstixchix! Totally. No one except young fertile white heterosexual couples should be able to get married. Ohh wait, haven't we been through this already? Hmm, say, 1940-ish in this country called Germany? That didn't go too well, did it.

OK, I'm being sarcastic, but I do feel that gays should be able to get married just as straight people can. With the separation of church and state still being the rule (last I checked), the "God" argument does not (in theory) apply to civil marriages.

I'm totally for same sex marriages!!!

1. gay and lesbians don't have anything to do with your life so you should leave them alone!

2. i think people shouldn't be so judge-mental, i have friends that are lesbians! and they don't act or look any different then any other person I've met!

3. people have a right to be happy with whoever makes them happy!

let me ask you a question are you for or against????

All for it! Why? Because what does anyone else care about who's sleeping with who or who's raising a child with who. Everybody has choses in this world, it's their chose to be with same sex, it's the other people's chose to steer clear if they don't like it. I wish people would just mind their own business in this world.
