why do white people call black people coloured? i mean for gods sake! they were born black, they grew up black, when they're sick they are black, when they go out in the sun they are black, when they are cold they are black and when they die they are black.

us on the other hand, when we were born we were pink, when we're sick we are green, when we stay in the sun we go red, when we're cold we go blue and when we die we go purple.

and yet, we have the nerve to call them coloured?

who else feels this way? i have had a very strong opion on this since i was about 7 (im now 13, 14 in about 13 days)

has anyone got any views on this to share?

In today's world we fear not being POLITICALLY correct. We base a lot of labels on what we see. In the past we used to label African Americans with very derogatory descriptions, even if those descriptions didn't have anything to do with what they truly were or how they acted. Even when the true definition of the words used didn't even fit the society people came from.
We try and make our world a place were differences are acceptable, yet we still segregate because of physical differences. People through out the dawn of time have done much worse, and views on differences will take many lifetimes to change. The term colored in reference to African Americans I would like to believe is a much more respectful term society uses to describe a difference most people have no choice but to notice. It doesn't make sense to me either why that particular term was chosen, but I would like to think that society is trying to take small steps toward changing the way in which we address differences without being derogatory.

You need to grow up and black people also get sunburned so the term colored can apply to anyone, any where. You need to settle your little self down and learn a little more about life before you go spouting off like you know what your talking about. By the way where you grow up has nothing to do with racism, being a racist or not has everything to do with your upbringing, whether you are brought up in a home that teaches tolerance and acceptance or a home that teaches ignorance.

Well, I thought the term "colored" went out in like, the 1960's or 70's, so I was really surprised when I went to college and this girl from the coal regions (who shared my townhouse with me) referred to a black person as "colored". Then when I moved out of NJ and to PA, I hear it all the time.

I work with older adults, so I can understand if they never got used to more politically correct terms or just saying black. But I hear it from younger people, even those still in school!

I always thought it was a strange thing to say, and thought it went out after the civil rights movement.

The only white people I know of that call black people colored are over 60 years of age.

And black people arent black. They are varying shades of brown. They get darker in the sun just as we do. They even get sunburned.

Do you really think it is a big deal? What about words like 'cracker', that are much more insulting and much more commonly used?

There is nothing wrong with referring to black people as colored, IMO. We are all colored as far as I can tell. Just different colors.

Because years ago they asked to be called colored. Then they changed it to African Americans. Now they want to be called Black. Keep in mind they used to be called slaves and whites used to be called Master so just be happy that those terrible days are gone forever and stop obsessing about this - 7 years is enough.

Personally, I hate the terms "white" and "black." Not that I'm condeming "colored".. but still. Why do have to categorize? I mean, we already categorize by country, state, town, county, color, race, political affiliation, gender, sex, sexuality.. it just keeps going!

I do think that "colored" is the most racist thing one can say. Either people don't really think of themselves as racist, or they just don't have the balls to come out and say "the N word."

no one where I live in the northwestern US calls black people colored .

I think that from the way you spell the word "coloured", you might be in jolly old England. Am I right???

I wouldn't put too much thought into this. People are people, just "Let It Be"
