My Cingular phone recently just broke, and I am not elligible to update my phone, nor am I interested in renewing my contract (I'm hoping to shop around when this one is done with). I've recently learned of "unlocked" phones. Would it be a good idea to get a Cingular unlocked phones, and if so where can I get one? Or is it better just to get a generic one? I would like it to be able to work if I chose to switch providers. Also does anyone know of a website where I can get a good reliable unlocked phone? Thanks :)

You can buy them at places like Amazon.com. When you go to the cell-phone section, there is a link to UNLOCKED PHONES. Just follow the link and buy yourself a GSM phone. Those are not Cingular unlocked phones. They are unlocked phones. The difference is, they do not have the Cingluar logo. Be sure to buy the GSM kind, not TDMA or CMDA or any other kind.

You can also buy those unlocked phones from manufacturers directly. I know NOKIA sells unlocked phones directly to consumers and so does Motorola and Palm. The prices are quite high without contracts. If you decide to go to Amazon route, be sure to read the comments from buyers. Some appears to be a phone for the foreign market, and the manuals are often NOT in English and chargers are for different type of sockets.

As others have said, Ebay or you can
1) Purchase an unlocked phone direct from manufacturers like Motorola or Nokia
2) Purchase a Cingular phone at full price through a Cingular corporate store. That will not renew your contract and you would be able to call Cingular and request the unlock code, it will take about 5 days to recieve by email. (Yes, Cingular will unlock thier phones if you meet certain requirements, doing the above you would meet them) Ebay is the least expensive route but remember, theres a good chance the manufacture will not honor the warranty

it really is the issue with some unlocked telephones. not all the applications and apps are suported by the vendors. you should envision with your company and seek for the telephones they help. I had a cingular crazr, yet service with t-cellular, i might want to not get into t-zones, i might want to not get any image message.
