No particular reason, it just happened that way in mammals.

There are other species in which environmental cues determine the sex, instead of having a specific chromosome for sex determination. Alligators - temperature at which the egg was incubated. Some fish - change sex if there's not enough of the other sex around.

Hi. Creatures that reproduce sexually can and do combine their genes, resulting in a better chance for survival of some.
