There really was (is) a MacArthur's Park. The park is a metaphor for life. The green icing is grass. The beauty of the park is not seen at night, and not easily experienced in rain. The joyfulness of life can be overshadowed by darkness (troubles) and sadness (tears).
That's the way I understood it. It is a weird song, but one of those viral ones that sticks in your head and replays over and over.

The lyrics were more symbolic and sentimental than descriptive (featuring the notable line, "Someone left the cake out in the rain"), and were apparently about a lost love and a rendezvous in the park although it can also be seen as a drugs parable.

Drug taking, by someone who has left his girlfriend in San Fransisco - famous line 'left the cake out in the rain, I don't I can take it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again'

He is so spaced out, he has runied his new stash for drugs. He is still thinking about the girlfreind he has just broke up with

I love the Richard Harris version - it is the best!!

I think they're about irretreivable loss. If life, or perhaps happiness, is represented by the "cake," and loss is represented by what happens when you leave a cake out in the rain, then real loss is irreversible. Making the sense of loss even more poignant is the permanence of the memory of the "cake," long after the cake is gone.

I'm sure the visions of a girl with "yellow cotton dress flowing like a wave on the ground around your knees" points to the psychadelia of it's time.
Incidentally, the best version - bar none in my humble - is by Beggars Opera from their 1972 album Pathfinder on the old swirly Vertigo label. Try & get a copy & tell me I'm wrong!!

It's about the demise of a relationship.
Someone left the cake out in the rain...doing some thing foolish
and I don't think I can take it cos it took to long to bake it....obviously.a long serious relationship
And I'll never have that recipe again....he'll never have another relationship like it
SO HE'S TOTALLY BLOWN IT

Had something to do with "life" nad the fact that he couldn't live it over again or like he wanted to because the "recipe" was gone - like the cake that was left out in the rain.........
