I am going to a ski resort for the first time...on the website it says to wear multiple layers of clothes, but that the first layer should not be made of cotton. What do you recommend for first layer?? Thanks for any advice!!

When you go skiing you should dress in layers like they suggested. The best kind of base layer is a polypropylene material (tops and bottoms) because they feel good next to the skin, it dries quickly, absorbs sweat and keeps you warm. Then wear a turtleneck and a sweater with the outfit. That is what I have found most comfortable from experience and also that is what was recommened to me.

The reason for not wearing cotton is that it holds moisture, whether it's water or sweat, and will keep your body temperature lower. You want something that will wick away moisture and keep your body dry. If something were to happen (you get injured or lost) this will aid in preventing hypothermia.

Go to an outdoorsy store like Bass Pro Shop and see what they have.

Cotton is fine....NEVER wear jeans. They get wet very easily, and all the skiers will know you're a newbie. And also very high socks. Make sure you pull them up tight so there's no wrinkles. That is painful by the end of the day.
