it depends on the climate where the home is located.if it is very cold and a lot of snow,then yes.i live at the beach and care for summer rental homes.i do not recommend covering the units because of the very salty atmosphere.you would think the reverse,i know,but in my experience they last longer uncovered so that rain can keep them rinsed off.for homeowners that insist they be covered,i rinse them very thoroughly with the hose and wrap them as weather tight as possible.

YES YES YES. if u look through the top of the unit outside you will see a fan blade. if too much snow gets on the blade it will bend and warp throwing it out of ballance. then you will ruin the motor which is connected to it. i suggest u cover it. spend a little $ now save alot in the future, i know i live in buffalo, ny. we get plenty of snow and have been in your position before!
