I believe that each human being has the capability of handling what the world throws at them. Unfortunately, we have built into us, a wavering willpower. We also posess the wonderful thing called stress. One any given day, thousands of people are faced with life altering dilemmas. Dilemmas go hand in hand witht the power of choice. We all know that each individual handles their daily problems in different ways.
First, you have the person who turns to substance abuse. Why does he/she do it? Pick from any of the above and you can answer this question. Is it lack of willpower, is the stress too much, or is it that a wrong choice was made? Could it be all of them?
Second, you have the person who turns to suicide to fix their problems. We often wonder what could be so bad that a person must take their life. Again, pick from above and come to your own conclusion.
Third, Violent Crime. There is no excuse for this behavior. However the professionals like to say folks are sociopaths, psychopaths, or lamely, just evil. That person who chose to kill or mame had lack of willpower, and a very poor excuse to make that choice.
My point is, everyone has the capability to handle things that come their way. Unfortunetly, these three examples show that capability goes right out the window. Impulse control is nil. And way too many times, people act without thinking.
Yes I think there are others out there who can handle life events. But too much of one thing, will eventually lead that person to break and end up in one if not more of these categories.
My conclusion is, people are inately weak. The more stress and life events that happen to a person, the more, (slowly over time) they will break. Adequately equipped, definately not, capability, well that's my way of saying hope.

Obviously not, since there are many depressed and suicidal people. Then again, people aren't taught how to cope any more. Everyone has the whole "It's their fault that I'm (insert relative complaint here)" syndrome. If people accepted responsibility for their own actions and tried relying on themselves more, they would find a deep resource in the human body. We are infinitely adaptable. We just need the self-recognition to use it.

No, because I think we've created a world built on exploiting each other and the Earth. We've gone wrong somewhere, and we have to go back to that point in order to start in a new direction where we can become the compassionate, intelligent, creative guardians of this world we are supposed to be.

No, two reasons there wouldn't be so much destruction and cruelty if people eventually learned how to handle what the world throws at them and second, there wouldn't be so many people who simply give up and die because they can't take it anymore.

No.
Everyone has a breaking point, and for some it's closer to the surface than others. The tests many receive in life make some stronger, and it drives others to madness.

No. We have to learn how to cope with life, but how can we learn without being taught? It starts at home: parents bear the responsibility of teaching children how to live. Many parents are remiss in this regard expecting educators to do their job for them.

I most certainly do. Our brain is a wonderful thing and if we only use a small percentage of it, then we are limiting ourselves to what we really could be. Everything is about choices. You can choose to handle whatever comes your way or you can choose to play dead and give up. We were all born with the ability to handle anything, but it is only what we have experienced do we consider ourselves strong enough to handle whatever life throws at us. We are all adequately equipped to handle anything, it is only our experiences that make us believe we are not strong enough. A lot of people do give up, they do suicide because they cannot handle whatever it was that life threw at them, but that doesnt mean they are not adequately equipped, it means, that whatever has happened to them in the past was just a lead up to the final thing that life threw at them and they gave up. It is always about how we think about ourselves and how strong we consider ourselves to be. And sometimes because of our past we keep on making mistakes, so its not really what life throws at us, its more to do with the choices we make. If we have no confidence in ourselves then we will find a mate who doesnt treat us well...thats not what life throws at us, thats a choice we make based on how we feel about ourselves. I believe very strongly in personal power and I believe just as strongly that life isnt always fair, but when you delve into the background of a person its usually what has happened to them in the past that determines the choices they make. Sure, there are situations beyond our control, eg, a loved one dying in a car accident, but you dont hear of many people who just give up because they have lost a loved one. The urge to live in most of us is so powerful. People dying of cancer will try every remedy possible to stay alive...they think life is precious and that is probably because they have experienced good things and life has been good to them. I dont believe in luck. I believe it is the choices we make in life that determine what our future will be. If we make bad choices we tend to blame life. I also believe that when a person gives up, eg, when they have lost their quality of life, then its not about being adequately equipped to handle tragedy, its more a matter of not wanting to suffer. They have handled it to the point where there is no longer quality of life, thats when they give up. No-one wants to suffer needlessly and its all about survivial. If you are unhappy or sick and there is no hope for anything better then you still make a choice to end it. It has nothing to do with whether or not we are adequately equipped to handle what the world throws at us, it has to do with the choices we make. We all have the ability to handle hard times, sometimes we just choose not to use that ability. Sometimes it is easier to give up than to exercise our rights to choose, but even when we choose to give up, you cant blame life, you can only blame the person making the choice. We are choosing to end the pain....and I dont believe that has anything to do with being adequately equipped at all. That is why some people handle everything well and some dont. Its a personal choice we make based on a lot of things that went on beforehand. It is about the confidence we have in our own abilities. I think the better question would be...do you think that everyone has the strength to accept that tragedy does happen and not blame life as a whole. Thats a cop out. You cannot blame life alll the time...maybe thats the reason they do give up because they wont accept that they are the Master of their own Destiny and its always easier to blame life, other people, situations for their feelings of being unable to cope. If I decided to end my life, there is no way I would blame life. I know I am adequately equipped to handle anything that comes my way, but whether I choose to use that ability is a totally different thing.

Depends on their background. Someone trained in reasoning and critical thought will have a much better time in adapting to change than someone not so trained.

I believe that with God's will everything will turn out to be fine eventually... He is sendig you problems to remember him, to ask him for help, for if he gave you all what your heart desires, you will never bother to return back to him or to ask him to grant you anything. Whatever problem you may face might turn out to be for your own good; you grow stronger, become more experienced, and much wiser than ever, fit to be able to move on. And whenever you face a problem, return back to God, and ask him for help; never ever think that he is not listening to you, for whenever your eyes sob the tears, he is embracing you with his own arms.
