I know that the internal ultrasound provides a more detailed picture. However, are they both equally sensitise when it comes to detecting pregnancy?

Interested particularly in external ultrasounds. When was your performed? (how far along)

Mine was performed when I was 14 weeks pregnant. I also found out at that time that I was having a boy. Any of the two can detect pregnancy equally; however, if you haven't missed your period yet, it may not show up anywhere, not even on the 'internal' ultrasound. I know because I had one done 5 days before my missed period, and although the doctor recognized what it was, the radiologist suggested it was cysts. And the doctor only told me that after he saw my two positive HPTs.

So when you have it after you miss your period, they both will give you the same result.

External

The vaginal or transvaginal (internal) ultrasound scanning is usually done in early pregnancy (first trimester), or in heavier woman. It is often more effective in early pregnancy because the ultrasound waves don't have to pass through the abdomen to reach the baby and show an image, as they would have to with an abdominal or transabdominal (external) ultrasound scan.

I've only had abdominal ultrasounds, but I've been given the choice of a transvaginal one. With my first pregnancy I didn't find out that I was pregnant until I was 3, almost 4 months pregnant. So my doctor performed an abdominal ultrasound. And I had to have several more from that point on, because I had complications with my pregnancy. I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and my doctor wanted to perform a transvaginal ultrasound during my first visit for a clearer image, but went ahead and performed an abdominal ultrasound. They discovered that I was actually 9 weeks along (going by fetal development), rather than 7 weeks as the first day of my last menstrual cycle would have indicated. I had another ultrasound when I reached 20 weeks, and we were able to find out the sex of the baby.

Really, the most accurate way of detecting pregnancy is by a blood test. However, if for some reason your dr. suspects a false positive, an ultrasound can be of definite use. Without a doubt, an internal ultrasound is the most sensitive and can pick up what an external ultrasound cannot for various reasons (cannot stand having your bladder full enough for testing, extra body fat, etc.)

Internal can usually detect sooner. I had an external done at about 5 weeks along and they couldn't tell, so then I got a female tech the next day and it was the same thing, she couldn't see anything, and then with the internal done that day it was clear. She had said anything past 8 weeks is fine for external, and vaginal is usually needed for anything sooner. Hope it helps!

my pregnancy did not show up on a external ultrasound when I was 8wks but it did on the internal sonogram. you could see everything, even the little finger buds and where the heart was. The internal is probably better at detecting and viewing the growing baby than the external.

I have had both. The normally do internal when you are in early pregnancy, and external when you are further along. It's just easier for the doctor to see the baby.
If they are trying to see if you are pregnant, they would more than likely do the internal.

I had external ones done at 16 weeks, 22 weeks...and on up. I have 3 kids.

the internal is done when the baby is so small, mine was done at 7 weeks along. it is hard to get a Good picture externally when the baby is so young. internally its easier

the external is YES less invasive but the same when the baby is larger, its easier to detect the sound waves.

Im not sure i answered your ?? but theres my try.

I think both are good, I have had both. The interntal takes a better look at the ovaries and the cervix. As far as I know they dont usually use any ultrasound to DETECT a pregnancy that is what blood and urine tests are for.

I had an internal one at 11weeks, and it was a great picture. I've also had and external one done at 16 weeks. It didn't seem as clear as the internal one, but we were able to see the penis just fine!!
