only when you are ready to give the two-week notice.
unless you are trying to pressure him for a raise.
which could backfire. i would wait until you have another job.

I most certainly would not tell him that I am applying for new jobs; however, I would work a 2 week notice after I have accepted a new job. If you tell your boss you are looking for another employer, he might find a new employee before you have a new job and then you would be j.o.l. Your new employer will respect and accept that you have to work a 2 weeks notice.

If you tell your boss you're applying for another job, you might be out the door before you get another job. I know companies that fire employees for having their resume updated on the internet or if they think the employee is looking at other options. Only give your 2 week notice when you are presented with an offer letter from the other company.

I would wait until I had another job offer. Let the new "boss" know you need two weeks before you can start (he/she will not only understand, but respect it), then let your boss know about the new job as your reason for handing in two weeks. He/she might make you an offer to stay. If so and it's better than the new job, you can let them know and they might raise their offer. Maybe not, but it never hurts to try!

Never tell a current employer you are looking for another job. That is the quickest way to lose your current job. When you land a new job, politely provide a written notice of your intent to vacate your job (list a date of seperation) and fulfill that date. Do not act on the urge to tell your boss what you think of him/her. This will ALWAYS come back to haunt you.

In my experience I have found that being honest with your boss about things like that always ends up being a bad thing. I have worked with a girl who did that exact thing and her boss said "you don't wanna be here then go." She was "laid off" the next day. Really what it comes down to is what kind of person your boss is. Are they gonna take that sort of thing personally or are they going to say "well if you need refrences let me know".

no no no
OH did I say NO!
'you do not tell him your looking, even though if some one calls for a reference, then he will know, but you do not say your looking, what about if it takes you several months, or longer..will he find a reason to fire you or let you go?? I do not know...do not tell him...
and DO NOT give 2 week notice until you have secured another job...totally secured the other job...
do you know that most HIGH paid people look almost all the time for new jobs, but they do not tell anyone....and if they get their new job, that's when anyone finds out...
good luck

Like my dad has always said, "It's easier to find a job when you have a job." Don't give your two week notice until you actually have the other job lined up. When your prospective employer says, "When can you start?", tell him, "Two weeks."

I gave 2 weeks notice once and my boss told me to grab my stuff and get off the property. I guess it all depends on your financial situation. If you can afford to quit, then look for another job, go for it.

DO NOT tell anyone you are looking for another job. But continue to look for another job on the sly. When you have been hired for the new job tell the employer that you are currently employed and that you need to give your 2week notice.

Given the present job situation, don't tell your boss anything till you get another job.
