Preferably something easy to take care of and that doesn't require a lot of work, such as frequent cleaning of tank or bowl, etc.

If you don't want to do frequent cleanings and water changes, I'd get an aquarium with a good filter (the Eclipse bio-wheel system aquariums are great if you are willing to spend the money). Fish bowls need to have some of their water changed at least twice a week to keep it healthy for the fish, plus its a lot easier for the water to go bad and kill a fish in a bowl.
If you are really serious about having low maintence fish, add live plants to the aquarium, make sure there are at least 2 gallons of water per inch of fish, add a community algae eater like an oto catfish for a heated aquarium or a garra pingi pingi for a coldwater aquarium (not a pleco), and small bottom feeders like corydoras catfish (heated aquariums only).
If you have a heated aquarium, go ahead and get a beta like everyone suggested, but only get one. They are fairly easy and have great personalities. If you have a cool water aquarium, I'd suggest white cloud mountain minnows. I don't suggest goldfish, they need 10 gallons per fish and very frequent water changes.

this is going to sound backwards but the bigger the tank the easier it is to take care of. a bowl has to be cleaned regualarly while a really big tank is ok with a cleaning once every few months. bettas are probably the most well adapted fishes to life in a small bowl but need regulated temperatures. goldfish are a lot dirtier and need cleaned a lot more but do better in lower home temperatures.

I would suggest a small school of neon tetras. Since they are schooling fish, you need to have at least 4, but they do pretty well in a 10 gallon tank. (just don't have more than 8 or so in such a small tank!) Plus, watching them interact with each other will give hours of enjoyment to your family.

Bettas are beautiful and easy to take care of. They can be kept in bowls or tanks but if you put them into a tank don't put any other fish in there no matter what anyone else says. They have long colorful fins that other fish are drawn to and they end up killing the Betta. Cheap and easy to take care of they make perfect fish for anyone. PetsMart sells them as well as most Walmarts.

Get a Beta... cool to look at and they actually are a bit social.. ours used to get really excited when we would walk by, and would follow our finger around the bowl. But empty the water once a week, water some of your house plants w/ the water they will love you for it!

it all depends on what kind of tank you will have for it. goldfish are usually good starter fish they require little maintenance and dont really need a heater in the tank either. livebearers are a bit more interesting (babies are cool), but they do require a heated tank (76-80degrees). we have both mollies and guppies and have had no real problems with them. if you do get livebearers, though, it is recommended to get at least 2-3 females for each male. (so as to not stress out the female).
regardless....i'd recommend at least a 10 gallon tank.

good luck!

Whatever you do...... DON'T GET A GOLDFISH!!!!!!!!! The smelly creatures are exactly what you dont want. Get a nice colorful Betafish. They are a great, even interactive, pet esp. for a 9 yr old. Ask your local pet store for more info if you need it. Plus they don't need a heater the water has to be between 65-75 degrees.

The easiest fish to take care of is goldfish. My lil sister has had goldfish since she was about that age and she is 14 now and has had no problems taking care of them. Make sure you do NOT get any saltwater fish. Those are more difficult to take care of and require more work.

Gold fish are nice....but an aquarium with some Fancy Guppies are better....in fact...get the feeder guppies..they are cheaper and the kid will still like them...and they give birth to the babies live...so interesting to watch!
