When it starts loading Windows XP, even the blue bar loads in slo-mo, and it takes 5-10 minutes for the login screen to show up. Once I do get into Windows, everything is slow there as well. Same as if I load in Safe Mode. I've shut down from Windows after it loads (takes a long time), and done so in Safe Mode as well. I've left the computer off for a couple hours and tried again, and nothing changes.

I don't have any file-sharing programs, and I have both AVG Free and AdAware installed and running. I don't get any error messages or anything unusual other than the slow speed.

I've had the computer for a couple years now, and this is the only major problem I've had. I shut it down and power up all the time, but starting last night it is screwed up.

Any informed suggestions? (ie 'buy a new computer' doesnt help, but 'I know this problem, here is a link' does)

Thanks for your help!

Try bringing up your Windows Task Manager to see if something is consuming your CPU.

well, if your computer is dell, you should ring customer service and ask whats the problem. Usually if you u had that computer for so long maybe theres a prob. in your device itself. AND maybe (AVG Free & AdAware) is out of date and not fully updated for the protection against the latest viruses. BUT personally i think that norton antivirus is the best one. Because I've tried AVG &AdAware and they dont really work.
I hope i was helpful. Good luck ;-)

If this is happening in safe mode as well, there may be a hardware issue. Contact your pc manufacturer.
