Does anyone know what Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" is about?

I think it is a search for something, hence the term Shangri-La. Finally, at the end of the song, peace is found helping them find their Shangri-La. They in other words, are searching for a destination that symbolizes peace and if you listen to the song there are various references saying that they have found that peace.

Like he is above looking down on the world longing for a better time and place. He sees the world in decay but is "sent" there anyhow. My hubby thinks aliens cause of the line about a gentler race. I thinks maybe mystics, like Native Americans, how they talk softly and speak in their language around a fire and tell stories. It is a very strange song.

I think it's about traveling through the desert of Kashmir. Any deeper meaning eludes me.
