The creosote that is the preservative in most old railroad ties is considered a carcinogen.

Old railroad ties can be deceiving. They may look okay on the surface but may be rotten on the inside. Remember they have all ready been in use exposed to the weather for years. There is a reason the railroad replaces them!

The smell and the possibility of cancer is enough for me to say don't do it.

I like the idea. Am always interested in hearing alternative housing ideas.

How do you plan on hooking the ties together? Knotched like traditional log homes? How big a place are you planning? Cabin sized or multi rooomed house?

I would seriously NOT do this. Railroad ties are usually soaked in creosote.....NOT good to be breathing that in all the time. And trust me, you would be breathing it in. Bad idea.....

be careful cutting rail road ties - there could be nails or other things in it that could damage any tools you are using

Be careful - those things are soaked in nasty chemicals to prevent rotting... you don't wanna be breathing those fumes.
