That is a common trait amont the TB breed. There is a cirtain point that you can't up their feed anymore. First you need to make sure that his feed is a complete feed with a proper fat and protein percent. Richer feeds like sweetfeed or Equine Senior will add more weight than a pelletized diet. With the feed you can also use cirtain weight gain supplements. Your hay should be a good quality hay, either alphalfa or timothy(or a mix), I would avoid Costal(bermuda grass) hay since it has little nutritional value. You must be carful though you don't want your horse to gain weight too fast or you may risk her foundering or colicing. Best of luck to you.

If this horse has been wormed and had a teeth float done in the last year and still not gaining weight try adding fat to her diet.
It will add calories with out making her hot or hyper.
Add either a liquid oil starting out with a 1/4 cup and working up to one cup per feeding. Or you can buy a product called rice bran it is a powder that you top dress over the feed. It is fat and will add calories.
Beet plup is good also. It is a great source of fiber and you can feed alot of it and not risk colic or founder. You have to soak it in water first and then add the grain feed to it.
When I get a TB off the track I start them on a pelleted type grain with a protein of about 12% and then add rice bran to the food.
We also feed beet plup. We try to put weight on slowly and work them while we are adding weight.
They all get free choice grass hay and pasture 12 hours per day.
It takes me about 6 months or so to get them up to where I like to see most of them. But it works well and is cost effective.
Good luck with your new horse.

Beet Pulp. Buy a bag, soak it in water for at least a couple of hours then let your horse slop it up. It's messy. It'll add weight pretty fast though. As for how much to feed and how often, you should really just give your vet a call and see what they suggest.
Good luck!

the "weight Builder' supplement worked great for one of my mares. I believe that it may be made by farnham. not sure check out valleyvet.com or jeffersequine.com they have that along with several other weight building supplements. These are great because your not feeding that excess grain that can cause colic.

Don't push too hard trying to get her to gain weight. She could colic. You could try feeding corn oil with her grain. You might want to talk to your vet, too. Also get her teeth checked.

try adding a little corn oil to her feed. She needs more calories, but be careful not to over-feed and give her colic.
