A female Redback Spider found throughout Australia. The notorious Black Widow Spider is a close relative of the Redback Spider. They belong to the Family Theridiidae. They have an obvious orange to red longitudinal stripe on the upper abdomen, with the red stripe sometimes being broken, and an "hourglass" shaped red/orange spot on the underside of the abdomen.

Its a Redback.Female Redback Spiders are black with a distinct orange to red longitudinal stripe on the upper abdomen and an "hourglass" shaped red/orange spot on the underside of the abdomen. The body is nearly d shape of a pea and slender legs
The males are only about 3-4 mm long and its red markings are often less distinct.
Only the female bite is dangerous. They can cause serious illness and can cause deaths. The venom acts directly on the nerves, resulting in release and subsequent depletion of neurotransmitters.
Common early symptoms are pain (which can become severe), sweating (always including local sweating at bite site), muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting. Antivenom is available.

The balck widow spider has a small red hourglass on the center of its round abdomen. There are several spiders that imitate these markings, looking like a series of red dots. The only one I know for certain is the black widow. Poisonous little critter too.

There are lots of them. Around here, there're two species of jumping spider like that, and also black widow spiders. Yes, black widows can have markings on their upper side in addition to the famous hourglass on the underside.

Ugh- the black widow. These spiders can be fatal and like places that are dark (pedestals, attics, boxes, etc.). Be careful when you pick something up that possibly could house a black widow!
