Nickolaus Copernicus is popularly given credit for formulating a system showing the Earth rotating about the Sun. He was a Polish Monk and lived between 1473 and 1543. However Aristarchus, a Greek philosopher, proposed that the Earth and planets rotate around the sun in about 270 BCE. Greek astronomer Heraclides is the first known to suggest that the Earth rotates and that Venus and Mercury may orbit the sun (350 BCE).Before that time the common belief was that the Earth was the center of the Universe and everything rotated in various ways around it.
