America's image in world is badly damaged and will take a great deal to mend. Sadly, it's not so much the American people but their leaders who have much to answer for.

All nations for the most part want to be as they wish to be, I personally do not agree with many, but so long as there is a sense of righteousness and arrogance, America can never be seen as anything but a bully.

You must also consider that after 9/11, America and the world had an opportunity to do some real soul searching, but unfortunately Mr. Bush chose to take the fight where it did not belong, thus the beginning of the tarnished image. You see, most people, including myself, had and have no problem with the Afghanistan mission because that is where Osama and Al-Quaida were. The problem is, IRAQ. The U.S. unilaterally, without any cause beyond a grudge frankly, invaded a sovereign, albeit ruled by a dictator, country. Iraq has not and did not pose any direct or indirect threat. If you ask most Muslims and others, they will tell you, they understood and understand Afghanistan. But Iraq, that was the beginning. Then of course came the arrogance of us or them. This kind of purile childishness was embarrassing and frankly made the U.S. look small and petulant.

If America is to regain her glory, as I believe she can, she must first cast off the vestiges of Imperial asperations (see the Project for the New American Century) and show some humility. Nobody, not myself, not the Brits, not the U.S., nobody likes being made to feel inferior, but some in the U.S. do that constantly and it is offencive.

America can be a great world leader, but what makes a great leader is the knowledge that they cannot stand alone and that they humble themselves, not because of fear or doubt, but out of respect.

Respect, it's a word we do not hear from America often, and if respect is what America seeks, she must, like it or not, begin to show it to others. Even those she disagrees with. It is the only way.

I offer these thoughts as a beginning.....

P.S. almost forgot, no doubt someone will make a nasty comment so for the record:

A. I lost my uncle and good friend in Tower 1
B. I have two brothers in Khandahar.

Probably all sorts of things that wouldn't benefit the US. That's the problem now - everyone thinks we need to be buddies with the world. What we need to do is start looking out for our own interests first. For instance: secure borders, government over-spending, poor educations, crime...it goes on and on.

Impeach bush, stop trying to force democracy on the rest of the world, take care of our own problems at home, mind our own business!

Well, it can offer more international benefits to overseas students... it could also offer aid to more 3rd world nations... But most of this will take place when bush is out... best wait for that... also, i'm american, but i represent a canadian, socialist way of thinking, it very much depends on how the USA's citizens act...

I don't think we should give a care about our "image". We should do what is right.
