Some ancient Greeks knew the Earth revolves around the Sun, but the idea was never widespread - they argued that if the Earth moved, than we should notice stars getting brighter and fainter as we move closer to and farther away from them, and nearby stars should appear to shift back and forth relative to farther stars (parallax). What they didn't count on was the fact that the stars are so very far away. We do see parallax, but only with telescopes. The stars don't get brighter or fainter with Earth's motion because the change in distance is very small compared to the total distance.

Even though the ancient Greeks though of it, a heliocentric universe was rejected in Western science until Copernicus, and even then it wasn't until after Galileo that the idea was widely accepted.

In 1543 Nicolas Copernicus published his treatise De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (The Revolution of Celestial Spheres) where a new view of the world is presented: the heliocentric model.
Prior to this, religion was the driving force behind the way the world viewed the solar system. This way of thinking placed the earth at the center around which all heavenly bodies revolved.

The Indian culture believed in a heliocentric solar system (earth goes around the sun) around the 9th century B.C. and the Greeks knew about it in the 4th century B.C.

Acctually the mayans knew about it before the ancient greeks knew. When the europeans came over they destroyed all records of this. Which they thought it was the work of the devil.
