What would be a good gift for a new born baby?

Question

My cousin had a baby boy recently, and I will be seeing the new baby next week. I would like to take a nice gift, but can't figure what to buy.

1. My cousin is going to relocate to a different country shortly, and so it wouldn't make sense to buy stuff that they will find had to carry with them.
2. I would like to get something "nice"; something precious and valuable; that would be remembered even later.
3. Budget is not much of an issue.

Would really appreciate suggestions, with specific links.

If you are combining a few gifts perhaps doing a little series that represent some values you wish for the boy for instance (I'm going on the basis that you did indicate cost was no object ;) :

May life always bless you with its riches: A troy ounce of silver or gold

May your life always be a safe and happy one: A blanket that displays fun colors, characters etc.

May you always know love and give it: A safe cuddly toy (Chapters/Indigo if you have it, carries adorable stuffed animals, very plush...turtles (totem for safety), rabbits, tigers (strength), giraffes etc. with big huge adorable expressive eyes)

May you always feel the warmth of home: A good quality outfit that is snuggly and comfy.

May you always know you are important and can do anything you wish with your life: Open an educational fund and put a nice amount into it to start it off.

Combine this all together in one well packaged item and for each item attach a nicely printed tag that is applied with a piece of blue ribbon or such and that has been printed or calligraphied with each wish.

Each symbolizes your wishes for him and each is special and "nice" on its own or together. It offers a valuable and useable gift that will keep giving for many years.

Everyone has really good ideas some similar to what I would do...
I recommend you take pictures of the new born with and without family members and if you have nay of mom while she was pregnant get those too and YOU make the scrapbook. The time and thought will mean a lot to the family, maybe in the book put that it is to the baby from you so the baby gets the scrapbook when he is older. Stocks and bonds are very nice, however, they will someday be used and therefore don't last a lifetime.

Another thing you might do is offer your cousin the gift of your time helping with moving and taking care of the baby while they get ready to move.. its tough to pack and move with a little one.

I am a new mom myself mine has just turned a year old. There are several things that you can get for them that are useful. A stroller that carries the car carrier, the cover that covers the carrier was a life saver during the winter months. I love the pack n play.

Now to have something that is precious and valuable. You could get the mother a necklace with a baby charm of the baby's birth stone.This could start a tradition for you to keep buying the charms for the rest of the children they may decide to have. I have one for all of my children and love it. It is always nice to get things that you need for the baby but it is even better when people buy something for the mother also. Then buy a really nice picture frame for her to put a photo of the baby in.

Get a bunch of stuff that would be helpful to your cousin, like diapers, bottles, blankets, etc. If money isn't much of an issue, get them a gift certificate to a baby store, or even Wal-mart so they can buy things that they really need for the baby. Something that can be remembered later, what about a camera and scrapbook supplies?

They have these really neat foot and hand print makers that your cousin can put the baby's hands and feet in to make an impression of the size of their hands and feet at that time. Gift card is always the best. Easy to carry and believe me they will appreciate it because they can get what they want even if not right now, they can get it later. Sometimes when you get a bunch of things that they might not need they end up getting thrown away, dusty, never used or given to someone else. So in their case I would give them a great card with personal thoughts, and a gift card for whatever amount of money you would spend on a gift.

Go to a local portrait studio. Just look in the yellow pages for photographers. Buy a portrait package in the form of a gift certificate. Put the gift certificate in a photo album.

i bump into that new children have a tendency to get lots of outfits & they develop out of it fairly straight away! What i bump into to be sensible and positioned to giant use is a vapouriser! All children receives a cold/stuffy nostril quicker or later and that's a nightmare for moms (and oldsters) fantastically even as feeding as children can't breath by way of their mouth. this can reason endless sleepless nights for all. My bub those days had a blocked nostril and she or he couldn't breath, couldn't sleep or eat and would only cry and cry. once i purchased the vapouriser and plugged in in one day, all of it cleared up! that's a life saver. it is not the most 'personal' present, although that's some thing that would truthfully come into reliable use and she or he will thanks for it even as the time comes! :0)

How about a little gift basket? You could throw lots of little stuff in, like bottles or outfits or teething toys. Many people suggested getting something with the babies name engraved on it... you could do that too.

You could try a savings bond or a certificate of deposit with a long term with a high yield for interest. It would definetley be easy to carry to a new location, can be cashed easily and would be remembered and appreciated when the day comes that the child/family gets to use it.
