How come the headlights on our '95 Chrysler are about 18 inches from the pavement, and the lights on almost all pickups, suv's,other larger vehicles 2 to 3 feet above the pavement. If you are in front of one of these, their lights shine DIRECTLY into your rear-view mirrors. It's really an annoyance.Any opinions???

I live in california, and the vehicle code #4000, says that the center of the headlight shall be no less than 24 and no more than 54 inches from the pavement.
I know the feeling. when I drive my T-bird or my 2wd pick up I get the glare. it drives me nuts. especially when some jerk gets right on your tail.
I always try to remember this when I drive my 4wd p.u., and not get too close.
the only solution is to adjust your mirrors so you have to tilt your head a bit to see.

happy motoring & don't forget to breathe

Yeah I know what you maen i hate that too... what I do is move over to the next lane and then when they pass me I turn my brights on and go behind them.... that how you doi it... but on a serious note the reason for this is that the ride height of all these vehicles are different so you cant compare a passenger car with a suv cause there is no way you are going to have suv off the assembly line that is as low as a Honda civic cause it is just not "right"... good luck

It bugs the crap out of me too. It seems like every time I move my car slightly to the right or left, the jerk behind me does the same, just so he/she can sine their lights in my eyes. It happens all the time. I don't mind turning my rear view mirror up, but I hate to move my side mirrors, they take forever to readjust to the right place. Clear head lights also bug me, but that is a whole other complaint!

headlights do have to be so many inches from the ground..if you get a lift kit on your truck you are suppose to get your headlights adjusted..this is a law...my friend gets pulled over in our small town each time he gets his truck jacked up higher so that the cops can pick on him and measure his lights!!
