It seems like the first material that an artist comes out with is more unique and enjoyable. Material in the songs is more unique and riveting. They write about the days before they are rich and have nice rides, blingbling, etc. The days when life was hard---before girls were all over them, they were famous, they had $$$$$. They talked about hardship and life. Their stuff was good and they gained an initial following and fans...
Suddenlly, tons of people have caught on and the music gets pitched to labels and producers. Mr./Ms. Big Producer gets ahold of the artist and the artist may put out one good album of their original stuff, but then, under contract with Big Producer/Label, the artist is forced to create under the label's influence. suddenly, the label needs another album out. more money, more stuff.
You then start seeing "forced production of art", which is usually NOT how good songs get written. So, the artist is producing on a timeline---try being really creative, unique and down to earth/original on a deadline! Also, the producer wants stuff to be popular and fit a form.
And, since ALL of the radio stations in the USA are all owned by like 4 major corporations, these corporations decide what gets played, and therefore, what is listened to and, therefore (in some abstract way) what is popular !
So, what is POPULAR is forced upon the original ARTIST---"write a hit, write a hit, write a hit"

I have a question for you; Why is rock considered music? Its just a bunch of yahoos screaming their heads off!
Not all rap is about drugs, violence, cars, money, and sex. Some rappers actually rap of worthy topics like Common,MC Lyte, 2Pac,Biggie(sometimes), Jadakiss, etc. They do rap about world issues and issues that go on in their own neighborhoods....so don't sit there and judge about something you know nothing about!
P.S. I've never came across questions here about why rock or country are considered music. No one trashes your music so don't trash ours. Everyone has their own taste in certain things so stop judging!

It's music because it has been considered music for a long time. Why did MTV have Yo MTV Raps if it wasn't considered music? So what, if you don't like what they rap about, why even bother asking anyway? Just change the station or don't listen to it, to each is his own.

I don't get rap either...it's just a bunch of b****ing about the same thing over and over again and half the time you can't understand anything they say. I hope people will get over the "rap craze" and get back into some REAL music.

I wouldn't just clump all rappers in one ball, there are alot of good deep lyricists out there like talib khwali, common, tupac had some good stuff along with biggie and big pun.....then you got certain songs by jay-z and nas that really mean stuff.now i don't like all rap,me personally i can do without the snap ya fingerz and whatnot but that's just me,if you like it then more power to you,do you.but i also feel the same thing can be said of every genre r&b,country, rock etc....not everyone who is out there has that magic they all had and still have their share of boo boos.

Because it sells right? Why are there so many porn sites on the internet because it sells right? And why are country singers always whining? Why is heavy metal a bunch of grunting? There is garbage in all catagories of music but there is also talent you just have to have an ear open.

ROCK FAN HERE...
Not sure if you're a musician to even ask that.
See, in music, there's what we call melody & rhythm. Rap/hip hop, for the most part, is primarily rhythm-based.
As for subject matter, seems you've only been exposed to the crap on MTV/BET. The *good* stuff that has social value is underground & out of the public eye....

I thought music involved a tune..you know, notes played together to make a melody. I agree with you, rap doesn't seem to have a tune, just a bunch of thumping and talking to rhythm.
