All PS2 games should work on PS3. Just like all PS1 games work on PS2. Everything should be backwards compatible, games, joy pads, memory cards, etc

Sony announced on Tuesday that 8,000 PS2 and PS1 games dont work on the PS3. Most of them you can play but are missing things, like there isnt background music or other a weapon doesnt work right, then there are some games that dont work at all. But most games are playable

You are supposed to be able to play all of them. The nice feature of the Play Stations as they are backwards compatible. No special chip required.
There are reports of some problems with the new Play Stations sold in Japan not playing the older games like they are supposed to. Sony has supposedly issued a patch.
I expect similar problems when the Play Station 3 hits the U.S. market as these units have left the factory a long time ago. I assume they will require a patch too.

Probably none without a chip, just like you can't play PS1 games on PS2.

it is backward compatible but so far only Final Fantasy and Grand Tourismo that are having problems.

Technically you won't be able to play all of them, but you will be able to play the ones you have, borrow, or buy.
