They were used in the 50' and 60's for Domestic Science classes. The had a handle on them and were made from wicker or similar material and sometimes they had a cotton cover over them to keep your food that you had cooked in class warm.

Oh ye gods, I remember those things, sort of a moon shaped handle that carried straight round into the basket. I used to call mine a beepin' nuisance. The main thing I remember about them (apart from their amazing capacity for holding everything including the kitchen sink, all neatly covered by a striped linen T-towel) was the way they made dirty great holes in my tights! I suppose I should blame it on my stupidity for wearing such ludicrously short skirts!

we just called them cookery baskets but the gondola baskets were a different shape to the cookery baskets we used at school they were obviously the shape of the gondola boats in venice or wherever
