my daughter is 4, and her dance teacher is in her 40's. any suggestions?

Well, try a boutique shop that carries dance equipment..they usually have something...or you could go crafty and help your daughter make her cake in a jar (look it up on the Internet..there is lots of them...) its fun for your daughter and makes her part of the gift, and the teacher in her will enjoy the story from your little one.
Of course, a porcelain apple always works for any teacher! :)

How about a Christmas tree ornament shaped like ballet or tap shoes, whichever she teaches. You could get her a gift certificate to your local dance wear store.

Get her a gift certificate from a favorite restaurant or a dance supply store. That way she can choose what she needs or wants and you make no mistakes getting her something she already has.

She will have plenty of dance related stuff - try a book store, spa or restaurant gift certificate it is far more thoughtful as most teachers I know never treat themselves.
