Laws governing property and spousal rights vary widely from one state to the next. Go see a lawyer. Initial consultations are usually free.
With that said, in many states it doesn't much matter whose name is on the mortgage. Assets acquired while a couple is married are generally considered to be jointly held. And so, a wife who moves out nonetheless has a property interest in the house whether she co-signed the mortgage or not. The same is true for any other property and investments.
It will behoove you (especially if there are children involved) to not be guided by what any of the folks here are saying (including myself). Call a local lawyer who will help you to keep a share of what is rightfully half yours.

Yes it is illegal. While you are married everything either one of you own is community property. I had an experience like that with my ex husband before we split up. He wanted to leave and take my car and I wouldn't let him. He was gonna just take it so I called the cops. And they made me let him take it because legally even though it was just in my name it was community property because we were married.. Good luck!!

She abandoned him, and unless you get a good lawyer, you won't get anything in the divorce. You may have to pay spousal support.

You leave, you lose. You'll have to go to court and have them get your belongings back for you. If you didn't leave anything behind, you don't have much to stand on.
