I would love it if my child's school elected uniforms. I wouldn't have to worry about fads and costs of clothes. Laundry would be better and there would be no time wasted on what to wear each day. There is no comparison to other kids when they are all dressed alike. This give them an opportunity to get to know who they are not based on fashion or style.

I do believe that privilege of attire should be used occasionally. At my place of employment, the business dress code was altered for charity. We would donate a dollar or more to specific charities by wearing jeans on certain days. This could be a great fundraiser for the school as well as offer something to look forward to.

I think it depends on the school, it's philosophy and student body. In private schools, of course, it's a lot easier to enforce if it's decided to go that route. Even in public school, there can be some basic standards (e.g. skirt lengths must be y inches, no ripped jeans, no slogans or logos on t-shirts, etc.) without going all the way to "only solid polos and khakis" or something that strict. There have been studies that show that students with some sort of dress code behave better and therefore do better at school.
