First you need to determine why the ceiling is cracked in the first place. It could be water damage from a leak somewhere in the ceiling, or shifting of the material used in the ceiling construction. Any leak must be repaired or else the cracks will just come back again.
It's easiest to repair if the material is drywall. You need a plaster knife and plaster compound, and if the crack is large, a spreader (it looks like a rectangular piece of metal with a handle on it). Put a cloth on the floor and surrounding furniture because you'll be making a mess. Dig out the crack a little bit to widen it. Mix up some plaster compound and fill the crack, then smooth it out carefully. Allow to dry for a few hours, then sand it over lightly and repaint the ceiling if needed.

this is wot u do,check surrounding edges of cracks and see if plaster has become loose itll sound hollow if it has if so remove all loose till u get to good plaster...now the gap u need to fill needs to b sealed with a pva solution mixed at bout 2parts water one part pva so depending how big area i shouldnt think any more than a cupfull will do u want a suitible non shrink filler repair mixed to a smooth consistency.. lil bit thicker than custard and using a wallpaper scraper fill gap so it is slightly proud of existing plaster then using scraper or a metal rule slowly drag on surface so it becomes the same level holding the rule at an angle will help make it go nice and easy there may b a few slight imperfections but these can be filled and sanded! hope this helps im making it as easy as i can for u diyers lol

if they are fine cracks I spread spackle on teh ceiling and scrap it off as I go. If they are large cracks you may have some adhesion problems and may need to button the celing and reskim the plaster.
