I am in the process of applying to graduate programs in clinical psychology. For one application, I have been asked to provide a personal statement (regarding interests, goals, experience, etc.), which I have completed. I am also supposed to submit a "personal history statement" that DOES NOT repeat what is in the personal statement. Any ideas? I'm a little stuck. Thanks!

In contrast to the personal statement which is current and future oriented, the personal history statement should be more backward looking (history). Discuss some things from your history that you have done that have either shaped your interest in psych, resulted in personal growth, and have otherwise been instrumental in making you the person you are today.

And, good luck!

I would liken the Personal Statement to a "Mission Statement". (Which is a short 1-3 sentence synopsis of your interests/goals etc.)
Good luck!

Well congrats to going to graduate school for clinical psychology. I am studying psychology as well. I think yoiu personal history statement should be what led you to choose your major in psychology.

personal history statement- tell about yourself as a child and growing up, what incident or teacher sparked the psychological interest in you? how old were you when you knew that psych was what you wanted? where you grew up, your family etc.

I think they are looking for your life story. I was born, went to school, my influences were, activities, personal details, hobbies and so on. "One of the big infuences in my history is when my Dad gave me a pair of child sized wading boots. That summer he taught me to fly fish . . ." and on and on.

Seems like the first question is asking for professional and education information while the other is asking for personal. If you have too much personal info in the first one I would back it out and use it in the second one.

Try to write a couple of stories that show your personality. I dont think they need your life's blow by blow. I have done it and it worked for me. Try to choose two characteristics or three, that you want to showcase about yourself and use historical data (stories from your life) that illustrate these characteristics. Good luck :)
