Two days later, the car won't start...turns over...but won't start. Call the mechanic says it must be something unrelated to the battery and alternator. What could be the problem?

I did question the cost. The mechanic said that parts were very expensive in 2000 Taurus because it is flex fuel vehicle...and alternators listed from $200 to $500 depending on the make.

The first problem is that it sounds like you need a different mechanic. The repair should have been closer to way under $300.00 .
Check the wire connects at the battery and alt.(the connects that go to the wiring harness-not the larger cable). It very well could be a wire camaged during the repairs.

sounds like its not getting fuel. Probably the fuel pump. But don't take it to whoever you just took it too. Thats too much money.
