Holy Cow! I just unplugged Microsoft OneCare and was blown away by how much faster my PC became. I'm looking for a new Anti-Virus program. Please don't suggest Norton -- used them for years, but have sworn off Norton completely (if you have researched anti-virus programs you'll know about all the bad baggage Norton drags along with it).
I need to find antivirus program that doesn't make my PC run like molasass.

I've got 17 answers so far with lots of good suggestions! Thank you everyone. I don't mind paying for a program, and I've used zone alarm as a firewall some years back (and liked it). So I'm tempted to try it, but on the other hand so many people are recommending AVG and Avast; I'm a bit torn... I've heard good things about Trend Micro, but have also heard that the 2007 version is a pig. The other ones recommended I haven't heard of so I'm going to do some googling.
Any other suggestions would be welcomed. I help about a half dozen people with their computers, so your suggestions will be helping a number of people.

I've been in this business for many years, answering this question for over 15 years. Just antivirus software alone will help no-one.
Protecting from spyware and protecting your IP address are needed first, and that means you'd want to purchase a firewall, antispyware, and antivirus software.
Buying an internet security suite combines all three programs and lowers your price.
You want free? Try Zone Alarm (free version of firewall), Adaware (free spyware software), and Avast (free antivirus software). This is a great free combo.
If you want to pay for the best Suite, I would purchase Zone Alarm Suite. Thats the best (better than ANY free solution because it cryptically checks files for authenticity, something freebies do not do) and easiest to use, in my opinion. Norton is huge and inneffective. Mcafee misses too much. Zone Alarm is VERY LIGHT on system resources. Good luck!

In my spare time I test antivirus & spyware program to see if the perform as claimed. And most important to look for embedded trojans in their program or embedded in the wizzard installer used to guide you through the installation. (In my backup pc).
Out of all the free and purchased programs I found Avast free for home personal use to be true state of the art technology. Plus their background scanner is light years ahead of any other antivirus program. Will detect and destroy in real time any virus that is embedded in any wabpage or file you may open or download. The scanner prevents just about all viruses from ever getting into your system. An if you already are infected the full scan will find and delete or put in their vault.
The corporate version is the same is the free version. They just make corporate pay.
Avast will ask you for your email address, so that they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After one year you must request a new key.
You will get automatic updates two or three times per day, showing with a blue pop up in your tray. If you have your speakers on you will always hear a male voice say, "virus updates have been updated". Or, "virus has been found".
I use Avast in two computer an I never had one virus in over nine years get into my system.
http://www.avast.com
Plus it will not drain your resources. Actually I have Windows XP Pro., which is quite heavy. An I never notice any drag with Avast or the background scanner.
Nortons I hope you were able to remove 100%. It was a living hell when I tested Nortons and then tried to remove. Nortons left 350 fragments glued to all my files/foldes and hidden all over my system.
Was able to remove all with software I have from http://www.rosecitysoftware.com Registry First Aid. (It was complex as I had to type in "Search Registry", Nortons & symantec for RFA, to perfrom a special search for the associated 350 keys belonging to Nortons.
Clinical Psychiatrist, France
If you have fragments that you are unable to remove email me an I will give you indepth instruction on how to rid yourself using RFA during the evaluation period. As this software is purchased.

What was said about Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic(free) is true...it beats all other antivirus in terms of detection. Download and install it. You should also scan your pc with HijackThis and submit the result to a forum that analyzes those scan results. Also scan with Spybot S&D and AVG Antispyware. Switch to Firefox as your default browser and use IE only to update Windows.

I use Avira Personal Edition Classic which is the lowest on resources and also had a great score on the antivirus tests ran at http://www.av-comparatives.org, plus it's free. AVG 7.5 is good but it didn't do that well in the AV tests.

Good luck!!!Can I give you advise?
Back up your stuff. Create a restore file. Put this in general maintenance and do so once o week. Then run your com on med security without a virus program running in the background. I mean, if you get infected you will know it most of the time. At that time you can quarantine your com. Do a scan once a week and don't worry bout running that bogger crap in the background!

Choose AVG, Avast or Antivir because this three programmes are free and they don't eat resources and slow down your PC. AVG is the least effective. Avast is good but has a low detection rate. I think Antivir is the best cause it is the most effective but sometimes it detects false positives.

I had the same problem so I tried and read about other antiviruses.. I now use Eset NOD32 and I am very satisfied with it. You won't feel the antivirus. Download the trial version from www.eset.com and give it a try. Good Luck

AVG and Avast are junk. I recommend active virus shield. It is the best and it is free.

I'll also recommend AVG like some of the others. It is free, it has very regular updates, and it barely uses any system resources.

Trend Micro Anti-Virus is good for your P.C. Norton is one of the worst ones you can get.
