Performance only, I vote Lotus. I have driven both of these cars.
Best choice for you depends on where you live. If there is a lotus dealer in your City or near to you, go for it. If not, you will spend a lot of money transporting it to the dealership. the lotus is powered by a Toyota engine (modified) and is a really excellent performer. Seriously fun. It is smaller and definitely less comfortable than the Benz. The Mercedes is an excellent relationship between performance and comfort and is also big on style. That said, there are not nearly as many Loti (plural of lotus) around. If you are looking for impressing chicks, either one will work. If you are looking for a daily driver, Benz all the way. The Lotus will only go about 150 miles on a tank of gas. It is built for speed and agility, not comfort. No matter what, go with the touring package if you get the Lotus. It includes non racing items like sound insulation. That should tell you what you are dealing with when sound insulation is an option. Good luck. I am jealous as hell. I loved driving both and for different reasons.

The Elise only comes in manual transmission and is smaller than a Mazda Miata, go with the SLK (much less time at the dealership for 'glitches'). The Lotus is kind of a chick car due to it's tiny size. Mercedes are soooo common, why don't you go test drive the new BMW M6, you'll have to peel your face off the back of the seat!

Depends entirely on what you want as these are two dramatically different cars. The Elise is more in the classic sports car vein, being very light and no frills. And it will generally match performance of much higher priced vehicles (it's handling and grip are fantastic, though the engine is very peaky and if on track you generally drive this like a momentum car even though it has a very good power to weight ratio).
The Mercedes is much more of a GT car, much softer and more luxurious. It still offers some performance, and for most drivers, it's probably plenty of performance. This is really sort of like asking would you rather date Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt? Sure, both are attractive by most standards, but chances are for most people they would only really be interested in one and wouldn't face much of an issue in choosing between the two.

if you really had that much money, you wouldn't be here asking this question. there is a fine line between a dream and an hallucination.
