I mean you see them eating coconuts and some fish, but they must have some kind of staples and vitamins to keep up strenous "challenges." Also, toothbrushes, soap, etc.?

They eat what they can find on the island, sometimes they are given certain staples...like meat or potato's but other then that it's rice and coconut.
If they win a toothbrush they have one but they usually use a certain kind of stick to clean their teeth...if you watch you will see them doing it...as far as soap, same thing goes....if they win it....if not they use the sand to exfoliate their skin...but no soap.

I remember an interview after the first or second season with one of the contestants. She said they were given some essential things, like the rice and they all had one toothbrush to share but they just used their finger instead. Also, the women were provided tampons however since they were working so hard and not eating much, the didn't need them and used them instead to help light fires. lol

I believe they are also allowed sunscreen after the first season because they were covering themselves with sand and it didn't look so good. As far as additional food or vitamins, they don't get those and you can really see how much weight the contestants loose week after week. That's why they try to conserve as much energy as possible between challenges.

I dont know but it must be hard for them to go through that and see the camera men and producers sitting there with brownies, kit kats, soda and burgers chomping away with smiles on their face. IT's a big slap in the face I think. But yeah they don't get squat. They are really "surviving" but I'm sure if they were actually about to die or something they would step up and help.

Somehow I don't buy this whole "survivor story"? . First off , I think it is a reality sequel to the movie "Castaway" - Tom Hanks. It is evident that the men don't shave and the weight loss among some of the contestants show that their food choices are limited and of a low supply.

The hygienic aspect for me is questionable. How do you take a bath without soap, brush your teeth and for the women, what do they do when it is their time of the month??

Come on people, there are cameras all around so this is not all real. Most of it is acting!!!!!!!

Apparently, the contestants go through months of physiological tests before they're chosen. For example, waking them up at odd hours of the day. Also, they're told to pick an outfit from wardrobe for a photo shoot. After the photo shoot they're dropped off on the island in the outfit they picked out for the shoot. That's why they usually seem so under-dressed.
