I asked yesterday about how to find a buried power cable in my garden. The solution seems to be to use a Cable Avoidance Tool. My electrician says a cable has to be live in order to detect it (my cable isn't connected yet). Is this true? I thought you might be able to either send a signal down the wire to find it or just to find the wire using a metal detector.

The cable runs from my garage (from a junction box not yet connected to the main fuse box in the garage) to the garden. Its intended to be used for garden lighting.

Not sure what William H meant by "If you just want to find the other end you can buzz it…..". Can you elaborate?

Try divining for it Use metal coat hangers or 3mm welding rods about 20/24 " long work well. Think you will need power to the cable but most people can do it. The water board have a device that they can clip on a metal pipe and then sweep for it. Take a line of sight from where it is to where it goes to and generally you won't be far wrong, think about it if you were digging the trench you would take the shortest most practical way.

Sounds cranky but a dowser could find it in 2 minutes because of the metallic content of the cable. I track mine under floorboards as well.

Undo a metal wire hanger and cut two lengths about 12" long, bend 1" at right angles and ask a woman to hold these short ends lightly between her thumbs and fingers, bent parts uppermost and the long lengths in front of her, so they are parallel, the rods will either form a cross as she passes over the cable or swing back towards her elbows.

She can then track the cable by walking backwards and forwards across the garden. I say ask a woman because most woman are sensitive the first time they try with dowsing rods, whilst most men aren't.

Depending how deep the cable is in your garden. you can use a curcuit tracer that will put a tone on the line and use the reciever to find the tone in the ground . Every time you pin piont the tone flag it so you know how the cable has been ran. You might be able to find a cheap one at home depo. .

your sparkky,s right. the cable will have an outer rubber or p.v.c covering so i aint sure a detector would find it.if you know where to attach a feed to the cable then surely thats the start point to hunt it out.

What’s the cable for? If you know its not live then I assume you know where one end is? If you just want to find the other end you can buzz it…..

Detec and Locat will trace live or dead cables, but I'm nor sure how deep in the soil it will respond. You may be able to hire one somewhere?
