There are 4 stages of mitosis: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

In prophase the chromatin in the nucleus condenses into chromosomes and the nuclear membrane disappears.

In metaphase, the chromosomes all line up across the middle of the cell.

In anaphase, the spindle fibers which are attached to the centromeres of the chromosomes pull the chromosomes apart and to opposite ends of the cell.

In telophase, the nuclear membrane reappears and the chromosomes turn back into thread like chromatin
