I think this question stems from a general misunderstanding of exactly what "swingnig" means. I have personally done quite a bit of research on this topic. What I've found is that it's not just people going off alone to have sex with someone other than their spouse. It's actually about *sharing* a sexual experience WITH your spouse.

There are many different ways to "swing"... from the very tame, "soft swap" (meaning people who just want to have sex in the same room as two other people having sex.... ideal for exhibitionists and voyeurs) to "mild swap" which normally means touching and oral between all willing participants in each couple, but saving actual penis-in-vagina penetration for your own husband or wife, to "wild swap" which means completely trading partners for the sex... but even then, many swingers choose to do this in the same room as their spouse, some even go as far as to say it has to be in the same bed!

Basically, I said all that to say that it's not fair to stereotype and categorize everyone into one huge lump when everyone is sooooo very different. People do still get married b/c they love one another. Swinging isn't the same as infidelity... cheating is HIGHLY frowned upon in the swingers' community. That doesn't mean there aren't people who do it... just that a large number of swingers are in it as a lifestyle choice... to take their marital relationship to the next level, so to speak... kind of like changing careers, going back to school, or buying a sports car at 40 b/c you want to try something new and different to spice life up a bit :)

Marriage gives certain legal rights to couples having to do with assumed power-of-attorney if one is incapacitated, joint-property ownership rights and obligations, rights with regard to any offspring (children), legal rights such as the inability of a spouse to be compelled to testify against the other spouse, etc. Even if you're going to "swing," if you're going to stay together as a couple it's worthwhile to get those legal benefits.

Why many people seem to think it's OK for "swingers" to be married and not gay people, I don't understand. They're entitiled to the same legal benefits of marriage just as anyone else is (those are basic human rights)...
Lots of marriages went very far away from the ancient traditional "one man one woman only to produce offspring" definition of marriage a long time ago, such as swingers. Marriage now is a granting of legal rights and responsibilities, nothing more, and as such should be available to all citizens.

Well, considering all the financial and legal rights given by the state with marriage, some people may prefer to have a "marriage of convenience," but still have sex with others.

To me, this dilutes "the sanctity of marriage" a heck of a lot more than allowing two people of the same gender who love each other to get married. "Separate but equal" didn't work for education, and it should not be applied to marriage benefits given by the STATE, not the church.

On a practical level, there are legal and often tax benefits to being married.

You can also still love one person and still be attracted to others. If your partner and you agree that's the way you want your relationship to go, then it's not hurting anyone, is it?

Marriage does have certain tax benefits, as well as dual ownership rights for both parties, regardless of whether it's a swinging couple or not.
However, I personally feel that swingers who are also married are only fooling themselves!

It makes absolutely no sense to me. Marriage is a commitment. Swinging (unless it's from an actual swing) makes the commitment null and void.

just because you swing, doesn't mean you dont have sex or love your spouse. sometimes a variety can rekindle the spark that has faded in a relationship. sometimes it goes bad. its about sex mostly, not an emotional bond, which is what a spouse is for.
