Hi,

I was asked by a friend (who doesn't listen to hip hop) "what is the difference between rap and hip hop"? I thought it would be easy, but then realized that while I can say that some groups/artists seem more like one than the other (examples mos def seems like hip hop, Wu Tang more like rap), I don't know if that's right or not.

Ideas?

I see hip hop as more of story telling. If you listen to hip hop (The Roots, K'Naan, mos def) you are getting stories. True or false or based on a incident. Rap like 50 cent and stuff like that is all glam and look at all the rocks i sell and woman i have.

To me the difference is the lyrical content. Rap and hip hop are created on the same pricible of a beat. But hip hop is a true expression of feelings and issues opposed to blowing steam out your hole to sell records.

authentic Hip Hop it is extra then a range of music that's a custom. it is a few thing that someone lives being a BGirl it has presented not some thing yet love of music into my life and appreciate for diverse cultures and made me go back and forth everywhere in the U. S.. It has taught me about street artwork graffiti. The historic previous of the MC and DJ and taught me the previous and what we want for the destiny. Heavy metallic is cool my mom makes me bypass to OzFest and it is relaxing love metallica and massive even as i'm understanding. Rap is without delay once you want to have a competent time and get the party all started. yet on the great of the day my coronary heart will continually be with Hip Hop I propose i will't bypass an afternoon without atleast one Rakim music lol.

Rap and Hip Hop are the same thing. Although most would consider hip hop the culture(grafitti, break dancning, style of dress etc...) and rap its music

hip hop is a lifestyle, a whole culture, started in urban new york, by african-americans and latinos. the hip hop culture includes art (graffiti), dj's, mc's,music (rappers, rap), dance (breakbeat).

so rap, basically, is just an aspect taken out of the hip hop movement started in the late 70's

rap and hip-hop are intertwined in a sense as they both stemmed from pop. so it would really be hard to declassify and differentiate.

hip hop is mainly in the beat. rap is more about style and how sick your rhymes are.
