I've had a hamster for a few months now and she was fairly young when I bought her.

But the problem is she's always biting the bars on her little habitat. Like for hours sometimes, she'll just chomp away at them and it sounds like morse code. It was cute when I first got her but I just started worrying about her breaking her teeth, then she won't be able to eat.

So, I was wondering if there was anything I could do about getting her to stop or should I get her to stop at all, is it normal? Thanks in advance!

Ok, so it's normal? Good. The cardboard is a good idea, I'll do that. This is my first hamster, so I wasn't sure lol. Thanks guys!

hamsters love to bite so it is normal

It is normal for hamsters to chew on whatever they can get their teeth on. At most pet stores they have little cedar blocks that they can chew on as an alternative to their cage. But they usually chew them up in a few days. Hamsters love to chew. They also love to stay up all night. They are active little animals. Does your hamster have an exercise wheel? If not then that may offer a diversion to chewing all the time.

No cure for hamsters biting or chewing. That is what they do when they are pets and in a cage. After many years of raising hamsters I have never seen a hamster without very sharp front teeth. Their teeth grow back. I guess if they did not gnaw on things they would have 5 inch teeth.

Happy hamstering.

She wants things to chew on. Hamsters need to keep their teeth filed down. Give her empty toilet paper rolls, apple tree twigs (or you can buy chew logs at the pet store)... don't use just any tree though... some are toxic. Look online for a list of acceptable trees. Small cardboard boxes would be fun for her too. Cut a small hole or two, then she can chew the box AND crawl around in it. :)

It is a hamsters instinct to chew. They do it to wear down their teeth otherwise they grow too long. They need to chew. just make sure he has stuff in his cage to chew on. Go to the pet store and get salt and mineral wheels or blocks (very important) and a few extra chew toys. Make sure there is stuff to do in the cage so he doesn't get bored. I take small cardboard boxes and make a couple holes in it. He will sleep in it, chew it, hide food in it and it's lots of fun for him. Just be creative and put different things for him to chew in his cage.

You can't stop the habit, but make sure she has plenty of toys and give her toilet paper rolls to chew on...they love them and they're cheap!!!
