Well, a shorter answer, I believe, would be to ask your boyfriend what system he would like. You don't have to ask him directly either, you can start things off by saying, "That PS3 is really something, huh?" He can either reject your statement by saying another system is better or agree with you. That would be your ticket to knowing which statement he favors. If that approach doesn't suit, I know you're smart enough to figure out another clever way to grab his attention on the subject ^_^.
However, if you want it to be an absolute secret and don't want him to know what you're getting him, I suggest grabbing a recent issue of Game Informer, Game Pro, or Electronic Gaming to get statistics on each system. The PS3, with its incredible graphics engine, Bluetooth wireless, and Blueray discs is going to be the most powerful system out there graphics wise, with a decent lineup of games to boot, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance: Fall of Man, Need For Speed Carbon, and Sonic the Hedgehog. That is, if you're willing to pay the price... The Wii, on the other hand, which is the cheapest system available, sacrifices processing power for innovativness. Games like the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Red Steel, Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 2 and upcoming titles like Super Smash Brothers Brawl and Super Mario Galaxies should be more than enough to keep your boyfriend playing. Finally, the Xbox 360 may have had its problems, but games like Dead Rising, Gears of War, and other great, coming hits such as Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Halo 3, is definitely attractive for the 360. However, all of this means nothing if you don't understand what your boyfriend likes, is it primarily graphics, uniqueness in gaming, great storylines, or straight up action? Understand these and choose accordingly, however, I'm sure no matter what system you get him, he will be satisfied anyone over that fact that you GOT him a new game system in the first place ^_^. (Or at least he better be...)
Finally, I wouldn't worry about a system having problems when you first it purchase. This problem can easily be solved by purchasing a warranty for the system, meaning that if your system goes up in a certain period of time, you can simply exchange it for a new one (I know you know what a warranty is, but I just love to type ^_^.). Make sure you ask your retailers for specifics on the warranty for the system you plan to purchase.
Peace Out and Happy Hunting!

First of all my compliment... I wish I had a girlfriend like you! Second what did he have, gamecube, PS2 or XBOX? Mostly I will go for the same brand but the second generation of gamingconsoles... Wii sound promising, but remember that its an Entertainment Center for the whole family, meaning even you can use it... PS3 is more Hardcore gamer, for those dudes that spend all night playing games, sides the technology it comes is the best there is, XBOX, I dont recommend it, its not the best is the middle technology and is already 1 year old, so I will go either PS3 or Wii, so just ask indirectly, what do you prefer? Have you heard the news, PS3 is rocking and Wii is hot... he will give you the proper answer to your question, not us! I always said, communication is the funding basis of all relationships. Hope you choose the right one! Good Luck! :)

id prefer the wii myself; its much cheaper and its the only one that will be available to most people. each store only got like 8 ps3s or something ridiculous like that, and they were all reserved 3 months ago lol. same with the 360. you should be able to get the wii before christmas, but you probably wont be able to get the other ones. plus, you can download any nintendo game made in the past 20 years onto the wii... pretty cool. go with the wii. at least thats what i would do
although it depends on what games he likes... if hes a huge halo fan, get the 360

first of all. always go with sony game consoles. who the hell would pick the wii or the 360 over the ps3? ok the wii is like a little kids console with kiddie games. and the 360 is just a wannabe. only a real man plays ps3. if you get your bf a wii or a 360 over the others, he will be like.."wow, might as well couldve gotten me a ps3." and the 360 is just.. old now. ps3 is the best one to go with. and plus, the wii is gonna be a bunch of moving. most people just want to chill in one spot and play. but then again. id be happy to get any of them. i got my 360 for free. lol. the only reason i would get the wii is for the new smash bro game. imma get the ps3 when i gets cheaper though. good luck!

I'd go with the Xbox 360, games are only getting better, tons are already out, while the ps3 will have first shipment problems, the Wii is more of a kiddy system.

what ur best bet would be on getting him is a xbox 360 it is an awesome system i have one and i love it to death. the games they have right now are cool and next summer they are comming out with halo 3 so yea you should probably be counting on getting him a 360. the ps3 is not going to be that good compared to the games with the 360 but if u do some research on them you can go to ebgames.com and look up reviews on the products and a lot of other things hope this helps.
