I've tried to grow watermelons but had one on each side of my sidewalk.

You just need to make sure the blossoms are pollenated from other watermelon blossoms. You can do this using a q-tip or you can let the bees and birds and wind do their thing. Be careful when growing any vine crop that you don't plant them to close together. Don't plant cukcumbers close to pumkins or you will end up with gourds when they cross pollenate.

They don't have to be next to each other, but that increases the odds of fertilization. The "fruit" will only appear when the female plant is fertilized with pollen from a male plant, and that's done by bees or other insects. Odds are good if they're next to each other that a bee will visit the male then visit the female, rubbing off some male pollen. If they're far away, the odds of that happening go down.

Whoever told you that is either a moron, or is pulling your leg. No, like squash and cucumbers, watermelon produce both male and female flowers on the same plant...and the bees, or the wind, will pollinate them.

Leave it to the Bees, they work hard and do a good job. If not for bees we would have less food, flowers, fruits, veggies, etc.
