I am not the grammar police. I usually get annoyed when other folks harp on someone for misspellings and grammar because they are ignoring the question itself and just abusing the asker for their shortcomings regarding use of the English language.

But I have to break my own rule when the mistake ACTUALLY CHANGES THE MEANING of the word intended.

In his case I would imagine that he rode in transport trucks as they would ROLL down the road. I would also guess that he listened to classical composer's like Wagner rather than Rock n' ROLL as it wasn't invented yet. But as far as his ROLE in the war, see the first answer listed here.
