It is the single most important event in social history within this country.
Before the steam engine, life was mostly rural with factory power concentrated in wild places where water wheels could be driven.
Steam allowed industry to move into towns, for work forces to be concentrated in terraced housing.
Steam required vast amounts of coal to power it, and iron to build the components, so heavy industry was invented. Canals were built to haul the raw materials to the ports, and the merchant class moved into the lower upper class.
Manufacturing replaced cottage industry, so a middle class developed emerged, to service the working class now that they were concentrated in easy to supply marketplaces.
When canals became obsolete, with rail, the cities grew at a massive rate; steam was powering transport, services- gas sewage, water supply, and electricity.
Overnight, the population was industulized, it created pollution, poverty, and depravation to the poorest, and vast wealth to the richest.
