It's called Black Friday because people who work in retail have to deal with a ton of caffeined up psycho shopping zombie suburban moms.

It has been called black Friday for many many years because of the biggest shopping day of the year, retailers in the black meaning positive cash flow as opposed to red meaning negative cash flow. It's just an accounting term. The day after Christmas should be red 26th because of all the returns but I don't think that would catch on.

Some would think that it is because the stores are so busy and it's horrible to be in them, while it is true it is not the origin of "black friday." Retail typically runs in the "red" (sales below budget) for a good majority of the first three quarters of the year. This day marks the turn around and start of strong fourth quarter sales when retailers make up thier money for the year, or go back into the "black"

The Friday after Thanksgiving? When stores are making a profit, the ink on old-fashioned printing calculators used by their accountants is black, so they are "in the black." When they're losing money, the ink for negative numbers on these calculators is red, so they are "in the red." There's so much sold the Friday after Thanksgiving that stores are guaranteed to make a huge profit that day--therefore, be really in the black that Friday.

PS--Martino is wrong. Many of my relatives are staunch Christians and very good at business; they used the term "Black Friday" since I was a kid. I'm 32.

No one knows the exact reason it is called "Black Friday", but there are two popular theories that I have heard and also saw confirmed on Wikipedia.

1. Accounting: it's the start of the holiday shopping season, so the accounts will go from "red" into "black" (profits)

2. Stress: Employee are stressed to the max with extreme crowds, etc

It is also called Black Friday because you have to fight until you are black and blue just to get to the good things that are on sale.

because the day after Thanksgiving- always a Friday, is the biggest shopping day of the year, and black (ink) means profits, so since the stores are so busy, they make big profits that day. Or they hope to!

One of the most popular theories is that accountants used black ink to indicate positive amounts and red ink to show loss/spending. Because it is one of the biggest shopping days, stores are making a lot of "black marks".
