My rent has been late but nothing outragous...I was late a few times when I was employed and no problem...now because Im laid off there is a problem...they call, tape letters to my door and send nasty letters threatening me of eviction and telling me I owe interest on my rent payment....also they have called my elderly parents and threaten them too..All of the other billing companies are working with me but my landlord....I have explained numerous times that my unemployment checks are not coming on a certain day and it takes 36 hours to do what they are requesting to pay them this rent...they are refusing to work with me..now I have received notice that Im able to collect unemplyment for 2 yrs while I go to school to better myself and I dont want this bothering me or distracting me....can some one help me with this?????

What I would do is #1 tell your lanlord that if he doesnt stop threatening your family members then you are going to file a report to the police. #2 Ask them if you are paying the rent at all. Then if they answer Yes then ask them if they would rather you pay the rent late or not pay the rent at all.

I am sorry for your problems but I cant help you other than this suggestion.

Your landlord is doing you a favor by giving you threatening notices. Being that you have been late with your rent more than twice, he has grounds to evict you without any further notice. When you have a lease you are expected and required to pay on time. Paying late is never acceptable except in extreme circumstances. Even at that, you should never be late on your rent more than once or twice for the duration of your lease. So if you consider the warnings and the threats to be distractions, consider that being much better than the distraction of spending the next 30 days trying to determine where you are going to live.

Your money problems is not the concern of your landlord. He probably has mortgage that he has to pay on time. He has every right to demand that you do the same.

Firstly, they should not be calling your parents if you are over 18. How do they have the number? They should call the poliece. They can charge you interest on rent if you agreed to that, and it's over the grace period (usually 30 days). As for the calls and letters, it is justified if you've been late in the past; but the next time they call ask them if it's easier to get the rent late, or not get it at all, and go through the process of eviction. In most states, it is VERY difficult to someone, so they'll take their money late. You should try to pick your battles and get that rent in on time. Pick up a part time job until things work out.

Have you actually sat down and read your state's landlord-tenant code? Each state is different.

It's the first thing you should do so that you are aware of your rights and the landlord's rights. Most states have an office of consumer affairs within the state attorney general's office that will assist you in resolving complaints.

My guess is that the landlord has taken it too far. There's no right to contact your parents unless they are on the lease or are a part of the security deposit.

Find a free legal services org. to help you with this. In most places, you'll end up moving anyway. I'm pretty sure that they can't harrss you tho. You might consider moving and paying ONLY what you owe in order to not be charged with the remainder of your lease and court costs. Judgements like this are extremely damaging to your credit and often prevent a move into decent housing in nicer places as well as jobs. Good luck to you.

Wellll...if you've been served with written notice to quit (or pay), then you need to pay your rent, or give up the property.
Unfortunately if it's at that point, those are your only choices.

okay. have you paid your rent for this month. and if you have he is harassing you and it is illegal. If not then he could evict you. but that depends on what state you in. In Wisconsin he can charge you a late fee on your rent, if it is in the lease., if you have one. but he can not charge you interest. I would take him to court and sue, if you paid your rent already.

Sounds like you are deliquent in your bills. That's why they are hard on you. I don't blame them. Get a job. There are plenty out there. You just don't want to work. Shame on you.
