So I was hired onto this company that is suppose to be training me, however, all i've been doing is sitting in my office all alone and reading a book. I am getting my first paycheck, and it's been me reading the entire time, and not learning how to do my job. I am getting tired of just reading and want to tell my boss. But she is never in the office. What should I do?

Take the money.

Do not let the boredom cause you to sleep - and then be found out and lose your job.

Avoid sleeping by placing a pencil on your desk pointing up at your face. When you start to fall asleep the pencil will pierce your face. Thus you will stay awake.

Sounds like an awesome job. I have the same job as you i think. all i do is sit here in my office and be bored, surf the net, talk to friends on the phone, sleep, etc. The pay is great too. I wouldn't say anything to anyone if I were you! LOL You are lucky man!

When you get tired of reading just try sleeping, the day passes faster that way.

I'm at work right now. I've already had my morning nap. After I answer a few more questions on here I will eat lunch, call my friend back, then take my afternoon nap. When I wake up I will go home and actually have to get some work done there.

Get out of your office and start to interact with the other employees. If they are in the same boat, then start your own study groups or whatever will help get things going. Then develop a proposal for your boss and put in on her desk or e-mail it, whatever. Then go from there, if things don't approve, then find another job, wasting your life at work is terrible and lonely.

Well what I do is play Yahoo Launchcast, which you can probably spend half a day setting it all up to the way you like it. Then I surf other sites, and do stuff like answer questions like this. Bring snacks, and your mail and other things you don't really need to be doing at home. This maximizes your free time when you are actually not at work. You can even watch TV on the internet, so what you complaining about??

It depends on your options and on your capabilities.

If you feel you can do more, than start looking for a better job. But if you think it is the best you can find, than you should start making noise inside the company: looking for opportunities, asking for additional tasks, trying to understand what is the expectaion your task and work should be.

The last thing I would recommend is continue sitting and reading and waiting for the day to pass.

Keep reading and try to keep a list of things you are in question to help you do your job more productively. Good luck. I am sure you'll do a wonderful job. Everyone needs to learn the ropes before they can critique it to perfection. Be prepare you will make mistakes, but this is how we learn.

What were you hired to do?

What do your co-workers do?

You're getting paid to read. Don't complain TOO much! lol

Seriously, can you ask your co-workers what to do or whether they were "trained" the same way. Try to catch your boss in the office. Surely she didn't hire you just to read!

Yeah that's frustrating. What are you coworkers doing? Ask them if they could give you something to do if you're that bored. Maybe you should look for another job!
