God is love. God is light. God is the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. God is the provider of all good things. God is what He is.
When the prophet Moses met with God, he asked what the people of Earth should call God, and God replied, "I Am what I Am" - Which, in Hebrew, is pronounced "Yahweh".
A lot of people like to blame God for the evils of the Earth, or for the blood spilled by those who profess God's name, but God is NOT the creator of evil - God is, however, the creator of CHOICE and FREE WILL.
Since God IS love, God wished to create beings that could love Him, but without CHOICE or FREE WILL, true love could not exist.
Imagine that you programmed your computer to say, "I love you." -What good is it - it is not real love, you merely told it to do that and it obeyed.
Now imagine that you meet a human being, that has the CHOICE to love or hate you, and that person says, "I love you" - and even demonstrates that love toward you. That, my friend, is TRUE LOVE.
That is what God desires from us, that we would all come to love God for what and who he is.
All the people of Earth are invited to be with God for eternity. To inherit eternal life, and to be ressurected after death to join Him in the great beyond - But ONLY IF they CHOOSE to love Him. How do we show that we love God? - By OBEYING what He has said.
Therefore, those that DISOBEY what God has said will spend their eternal life WITHOUT GOD, or AWAY FROM GOD. Some describe this fact of being AWAY from God for eternity as t"torment".
What did God say? It's in the Bible: Exodus chapter 20 - Here: (I cut it short for you)
1) "I am the LORD your God, You shall have no other gods before me."
2) "You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3) "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
4) "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
5) "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
6) "You shall not murder.
7) "You shall not commit adultery.
8) "You shall not steal.
9) "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
10) "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
Those are the simple Ten Commandments that God left us to CHOOSE either to OBEY them and be ressurected into eternal life with God, or to DISOBEY them and be ressurected into eternal SEPARATION from God.
That is who God is: An ALL POWERFUL BEING that has created ALL THINGS, who has existed from Eternity and will exist to Eternity, who wishes you to join Him in Eternity. Those that Love God WILL JOIN HIM in Eternity.
How does God know that we love Him? If we OBEY his Commandments.
